Your CV May Not Have an Experience Problem , It May Have a Positioning Problem
A CV can contain years of experience and still fail to communicate why you are the right candidate for a role. Here’s why positioning matters.
Having years of experience does not automatically mean your CV will stand out.
You may have strong skills, impressive achievements, and valuable work experience, yet still be overlooked by recruiters.
Why?
Your CV may have a positioning problem.
Many candidates try to put everything into their CV:
- Every responsibility they have handled.
- Every skill they have acquired.
- Every task they have performed.
- Every achievement they have recorded.
- Every keyword they think an employer might be looking for.
The result?
A CV that contains a lot of information but fails to communicate your value clearly.
A strong CV should make it easy for a recruiter to understand three things:
1. What have you done?
Your experience should clearly show the roles, responsibilities, and areas where you have developed expertise.
2. What value did you create?
Don't only list what you were responsible for. Where possible, show the results of your work — improvements you made, targets you achieved, problems you solved, revenue you generated, processes you improved, or teams you supported.
3. Why does your experience make you relevant to this role?
This is where positioning becomes important.
Your CV should create a clear connection between your experience and the type of opportunity you are applying for.
For example, if you are applying for a Customer Service role, your CV should not simply tell the recruiter that you have "5 years of work experience."
It should quickly communicate your experience in customer interaction, complaint resolution, client retention, communication, CRM systems, and other relevant areas.
The goal isn't to make your CV longer.
The goal is to make your value easier to understand.
Recruiters often review many applications for a single vacancy. If they cannot quickly identify what you are good at and where you fit, even strong experience can be overlooked.
So before sending your next application, ask yourself:
Does my CV simply document my career, or does it position me for the opportunity I want?
Your experience matters.
